Dental Check up
There are a couple of reasons for having your dental check up every 6 month. The main reason is dental decay. Dental decays start from small de-calcification of Enamel which usually is caused by acid produced buy bacteria. De-calcification means Enamel looses Calcium and ends up being porous. At this stage, it looks whiter than normal and that’s why we call it a white spot. A white spot can be reversed back to normal structure of Enamel if comes in contact with lots of Calcium or Fluoride ions. If it is left, stains from foods can penetrate into those porous spots and change it to darker color. This is called dark spot or black spot. A dark spot can still be stopped from getting worse but won’t get white easily. Sometimes bleaching of teeth can lighten those stains. If left, then decay will progress in Enamel and reaches the Dentin. At this stage, the decay is irreversible and needs to be removed by dental drills and the cavity be filled with dental materials.
So up to here if patient sees a dentist and has a dental check up or exam, dentist will detect the decays when they are small and can fill them easily and of course cheaper.
Unfortunately, there is no way to tell how long will take for a decay to start from a white spot and reaches to Dentin. It really depends on acidity of mouth, diet and oral hygiene of patient. So the sooner to stop it, the better.
If left untouched, decay will reach the pulp chamber where the nerve and blood supply of tooth sits in. A decay is caused by bacteria and bacteria means infection. So as soon as bacteria gets to pulp chamber, here it comes the pain. That’s the time which root canal treatment is the only option to save the tooth. With root canal treatment dentist will remove the nerve and pulp tissue from inside the pulp chamber and root canals, clean the area and fill it. When there is no nerve there is no pain.
OK, Still don’t want to see a dentist? Well, it is going to get worse. Infection will travels through the root canals and reaches the bone. When that happens it will form and abscess which is more dangerous and painful than before.
That was the process of getting a decay in a tooth and one way to prevent that is dental check up every 6 month.
There are other reasons to see a dentist for check up as well. Like having a professional clean done to prevent gum disease or having the soft tissue checked for early diagnosis of any oral cancer. If you need a dental clean, you can read more about it at our dental clean page.
