Denture

This has been the way to replace missing teeth for many years. It refers to any type of false tooth which is removable from mouth by patient. They can be make from different material and in different shapes to suite different people.

Generally dentures are made of just plastic or combination of metal and plastic. If a denture replaces all the teeth of one jaw it’s called “full denture”. If it is used to replace just some of them then it is “partial denture”.

Below you can see some example of dentures.

Acrylic Partial Denture

Above is an upper plastic (Acrylic) partial denture. Wires are for holding the denture in place.

Flexible Partial Denture

Above is a flexible plastic denture. It is more comfortable than hard plastic and there is no wire clasp. Even the clasps are made of the same plastic. The downside is we can not add a tooth to this type of denture and usually they don’t last as long as hard ones.

Full on Full Denture

The above picture shows full on full dentures. Of course some people may need just one full denture for upper or lower jaw. The opposite can be natural teeth or have a partial denture.

Metal and Acrylic Partial Dentures

In picture above we can compare metal and plastic denture. As metal is strong, it can be made smaller and thinner so it is more comfortable. The plastic one has to be bulkier to withstand the biting forces. The downside of metal is, adding a tooth to denture later on is always difficult and some times not possible. The plastic denture can accept an addition anywhere down the track.
