Dental Implants in Mona Vale, NSW

Dental implants provide an option for replacing one or more missing teeth. They are placed in the jawbone to support a restoration such as a crown, replacing both the root and visible portion of the tooth. Suitability and longevity vary depending on individual factors including oral health and ongoing care.

*Outcomes, healing times and fees vary depending on individual circumstances and treatment type.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant comprises three parts:

  • A fixture, which we place in the patient’s jawbone
  • An abutment, which acts as a connector between the fixture and dental crown
  • dental crown or artificial tooth

Finally, we cement the crown to the abutment for a completely secure fit.

We can categorise dental implants in three different ways:

  • Tissue-level or bone-level fixture
  • Custom-made or prefabricated abutments
  • Screw-retained or cement-retained crown

Each category of implant has its benefits and uses, and Dr Babak Moharrami will help you choose the implant that’s right for you after a thorough evaluation of your dental situation.

What Are Implants Made From?

The Fixture

Most dental implants are made with medical-grade titanium. However, implants made with porcelain and zirconia are also available and may be preferable to patients who prefer metal-free tooth restorations.

The Abutment

Abutments made with titanium or gold are the most popular. However, we can also use abutments made with zirconia.

The Dental Crown

The dental crown attaches to the abutment and acts as the artificial tooth, so it must have both visual appeal and functionality. We can make crowns with metal, porcelain or a combination of metal and porcelain. No matter what material we choose, we will make sure the crown looks beautiful and natural.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Since we place the dental implant in the patient’s jaw, where it fuses with the jawbone, it provides patients with oral health benefits that other tooth replacements cannot. As the jawbone fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration, it acts as the natural tooth root would, encouraging healthy bone growth.

This prevents the patient’s jawbone from shrinking, maintaining the strength of their bite and their facial structure, which can begin to sag if the jawbone deteriorates. Additionally, replacing your missing teeth keeps your remaining teeth from drifting into the gap, which can misalign your bite and cause a variety of problems.

Other benefits of dental implants include:

  • A natural, comfortable feel
  • Incredible durability creates a long-term solution
  • Stability and security
  • Improved chewing power

Mini-Implants for Dentures

We also provide mini-implants in our Mona Vale dental practice to help patients secure their dentures so they can enjoy a more stable fit. Mini-implants are smaller than standard implants, and as such, they’re typically easier to place and faster to heal. In addition, we can often attach dentures to mini-implants immediately after the placement procedure instead of waiting for the implant area to heal.

We generally place between one and six mini-implants, depending on the patient’s dental situation and needs, and attach the dentures to implants using an O-ring. This method allows patients to remove their dentures for cleaning.

We can perform a similar procedure with standard dental implants. However, mini-implants require less bone volume, which is helpful for patients who have lost bone mass.

When considering dental implants, many patients ask about the cost of treatment. At BMB Dental Clinic in Mona Vale, dental implant fees typically range from $4,500 to $5,000 per implant. This may include the implant fixture, abutment and crown.

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and support both function and structure. Treatment involves multiple stages, and we guide you through each step, including assessment, planning and follow-up care.

Suitability for dental implants depends on your oral health, medical history and bone structure. We assess these factors during your consultation and discuss appropriate treatment options.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth by supporting a crown, bridge or denture. Suitability and outcomes vary depending on individual factors such as oral health, bone structure and treatment planning.
Support for Tooth Replacement
Dental implants provide a fixed option for replacing missing teeth. They support restorations such as crowns or bridges and function as part of your bite.
Preserves Jawbone Structure
Dental implants stimulate the surrounding bone through normal function. This may assist in maintaining bone levels in the area of the missing tooth.
Support for Adjacent Teeth
Dental implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support. This allows adjacent teeth to remain intact compared to some other tooth replacement options.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process of a dental implant begins with a tooth extraction. The patient then needs to wait around 2 months for the gum to heal. After this, the implant is placed and gum is stitched, with the patient then having to wait about 3-4 months. In this time, the bone will grow into the implant micro-porosities and the implant gets fused to the bone. This process is call osseointegration.

After this, the dentist will make a punch hole in the gum, access the top of the implant, do the necessary measurements and get the crown or any other restoration made by a dental lab. When the restoration is ready, the dentist will screw that into the implant and the job is done.

Usually, dental implants are not painful. The entire procedure is done under local anaesthetic, which means the patient will not feel any pain while the work is being done. When the local anaesthetic is administered and the jaw and face are numbed up, it does not matter if it is a simple filling or surgical procedure - the patient will not feel any pain.

For single implant placements, there is usually no pain even after the procedure as the surgical site is small and the gum heals quite quickly. Multi implant placements or more complex procedures like bone grafting or sinus lifting can cause a bit of pain which can easily be controlled by over-the-counter pain killers.

Depending on the brand and material used, dental implants can cost between $3500 and $5000.

Whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants depending on two factors - the amount and quality of the bone you have at the site of implant placement and your general health. To explore this further, the bone quality and size need to be assessed with a special CT scan called Cone Beem CT. Your medical history is important as well. Smoking and diabetes are contraindications or can increase the chances of implant failure. Some medications, like Prolia, which is related to bone density can also cause issues with an implant. When discussing this with your dentist, be sure to be honest and transparent about your health and history.

For simple single implant placement, recovery time is just few days or even less. If it is a bigger procedure like bone grafting, then recovery may take around a week.
