Our friendly team of professionals love seeing happy smiles in our Mona Vale dental practice, and we love creating new smiles for patients as well using dental veneers. Porcelain and composite veneers can alter the appearance of patients’ smiles dramatically, covering minor tooth flaws for a flawless look.
What Is a Dental Veneer?
Dentists can make dental veneers using either porcelain or composite materials. We prefer to use porcelain at BMB Dental Clinic because porcelain is strong and non-porous, so it doesn’t stain. Dental composite will stain and change colour over time, slowly losing its shininess.
A porcelain veneer is thin, shell-like and slightly translucent. The dentist customises it to fit the patient’s tooth perfectly, and it should look completely natural. Dental veneers should also feel comfortable, although it may take a little time to get used to the new veneers.
What Can a Veneer Cover?
Dentists can use dental veneers to cover various minor tooth flaws, including small gaps between the teeth, misshapen teeth and discoloured teeth.
It’s possible to use dental veneers to make teeth appear much brighter, which is a longer-lasting solution than teeth whitening treatments if you want a whiter smile. However, the somewhat translucent nature of dental veneers can make covering badly discoloured teeth more difficult.
How Does the Dental Veneers Process Work?
The placement of dental veneers sometimes requires the preparation of the tooth, which includes removing a small amount of enamel. However, this preparation is very minimal, and it’s not always necessary. Even when it is, all preparation remains in the enamel and doesn’t reach the dentin below it.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
For patients who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth due to minor flaws, dental veneers may provide a fast solution that’s more affordable than complex dental treatments.
Benefits of porcelain veneers include:
- A minimally invasive procedure that can provide dramatic results for some patients
- A natural appearance and comfortable feel
- A quick fix for many minor aesthetic problems
- Durability and stain-resistance
In addition, porcelain veneers may make you want to share your smile more, which is always nice.
While patients may need to replace dental veneers eventually, veneers can last a decade or more with proper care and attention.
Caring for Your Veneers
To get the most out of your porcelain veneers, it’s essential to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine that includes regular brushing and flossing. While your veneers cannot decay, the teeth beneath the veneers still can.
Also, we recommend using a soft toothbrush and avoiding abrasive toothpaste.
- If you grind or clench your teeth at night, discuss this with Dr Babak Moharrami so he can recommend a nightguard or mouthguard to protect your teeth and veneers
- Don’t chew on hard objects, like ice, a pen or pencil or your fingernails
- Avoid eating hard and crunchy foods that could damage your veneers
Dental veneers are a wonderful investment for many patients, and we want your veneers to last as long as possible.
