Oral health is directly related to your physical health, which we’ll explore in this blog, but it also plays a role in your mental well-being.

Signs that your dental health is impacting your mental wellness may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Sadness
  • Poor Sleep

Oral Health and Mental Health in Mona Vale

The Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association found a 'significant link between oral health and general well-being, with poor dental health found to be linked to many other diseases, including diabetes, dementia and mental illness.'

Additionally, the pain associated with advanced tooth decay, periodontal disease and oral inflammation may negatively impact your well-being, leading to anxiety and general sadness.

The study also found that approximately 51 per cent of Australian adults do not brush their teeth twice daily, making tooth decay the most common chronic condition in the country.

Dental Anxiety, Stress and Gum Disease

The mouth-body connection is well established, but we sometimes overlook the correlation between poor oral health and mental wellness.

As a holistic dentist on the Northern Beaches, NSW, we have a unique understanding of how various bodily systems interact with one another. We are also keenly aware of dental anxiety and how it keeps people from getting the care they need.

A lack of dental care can lead to serious oral health issues, such as gum disease, which can ultimately result in tooth loss. Some studies even link it to pulmonary health and a specific type of dementia.

Fortunately, we can help you feel more at ease in the dental setting by offering a judgment-free environment, sedation dentistry options, and gentle dental care. Our only goal is to restore your dental health and help you live your best life.
