Preventive Dentistry in Mona Vale, NSW

Our team at BMB Dental Clinic in Mona Vale provides preventive dental care designed to support the health of your teeth and gums. This includes dental exams, professional cleans and other preventive measures based on your individual needs.

Why Are Dental Cleans Important?

Professional dental cleans aim to remove plaque and calculus, also known as tartar, that can build up on teeth over time. This build-up is not always removable with regular brushing and flossing alone. If plaque and calculus are not removed, they may contribute to gum inflammation and other oral health concerns. Regular cleaning supports gum health and assists in maintaining oral hygiene. During your appointment, we carry out a thorough clean and may apply fluoride where appropriate to support enamel strength.

Why We Recommend Check-Ups?

With regular check-ups, our knowledgeable dental team can watch for developing problems with the patient's oral health, including dental decay. Dental decay begins with decalcification of the tooth's enamel, which often has an origin in acid produced by bacteria.

Decalcification means that the enamel loses calcium, which makes it porous. When decay is in this stage, it appears as a white spot on the tooth. If it's caught early on, we can sometimes restore the calcium and fluoride ions to the spot, and it will return to normal. However, if the spot has already begun to turn dark, we may be able to stop its progress, but probably won't have the ability to reverse the dark stain.

Once the decay progresses through the enamel and reaches the inner layer known as the dentin, the dentist must remove the decay and treat the cavity with a filling.

If the cavity goes untreated and progresses even further, it will eventually reach the nerve in the tooth's pulp chamber. Opening the pulp chamber will allow bacteria to enter, leading to infection. At that point, the only option for saving the tooth is root canal treatment

We explain this to illustrate the importance of regular check-ups. When we catch problems early on, we can often treat them conservatively and prevent the need for invasive dental work.

With routine visits, we can also help patients manage and prevent gum disease and check for oral cancer to provide an early diagnosis.

Dental Check-Up and Teeth Clean Costs in Mona Vale

Typically, a dental check-up, professional teeth cleaning and two dental x-rays cost around $250 and $340.

*Please note that prices may vary depending on the complexity of your check and clean. Your final cost may fall outside the average pricing.

Benefits of Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry focuses on maintaining oral health and reducing the risk of dental conditions through regular care and early intervention. We tailor care to individual needs, and outcomes vary depending on oral health status and ongoing maintenance.
Early Detection of Dental Concerns
Regular check-ups allow us to identify changes in teeth and gums at an early stage. Early detection may assist in managing dental concerns before they progress.
Reduces Risk of Dental Concerns
Preventive care such as professional cleaning, fluoride treatment and oral health advice supports the management of plaque and bacteria. This may help reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease when combined with good oral hygiene.
Maintains Long-Term Oral Health
Ongoing preventive care supports the health of teeth and gums over time. Regular visits and consistent home care may assist in maintaining function and reducing the need for more complex treatment.

There are several factors that might make you more prone to developing tooth decay and cavities, such as:

  • Eating after brushing before going to bed at night.
  • Brushing in the morning before breakfast instead of after
  • The type of toothbrush you use—soft-bristle or electric is best
  • Using natural toothpaste instead of those fortified with fluoride
  • Lack of fluoride in drinking water
  • Lack of flossing
  • Daily snacking
  • Routinely eating sweets
  • Regularly consuming highly acidic foods or drinks
  • Genetics
  • Dry mouth
  • Grinding and clenching teeth (bruxism)
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Drug use

Following a consistent home care routine and visiting your Mona Vale dentist every six months for professional teeth cleans and checks are the best ways to protect your teeth from tooth decay and cavities.

Be Proactive About Your Dental Care to Protect Your Smile

If your Mona Vale dentist detects tooth decay, it's crucial to address it promptly. Ignoring tooth decay can lead to more severe issues, such as the decay spreading to the tooth's nerve, potentially causing an infection.

Early detection allows for minimally invasive treatments like dental fillings, which can effectively halt the decay.

If you're concerned about tooth decay, we’re happy to share tips and preventive measures to help you maintain a healthy smile.

If you feel like you're always in the dental chair, you may be more prone to developing tooth decay than others.

Here are a few tips and measures to protect your smile and reduce your likelihood of developing cavities.

  • Improve your oral hygiene.
  • Brush after each meal.
  • Pay attention while brushing, ensuring you clean every tooth from every angle.
  • Floss at least once a day or after each meal.
  • Use interdental brushes at least once a day.
  • Remove any food stuck between your teeth straight away.
  • Use Zero Alcohol mouthwash every day after brushing - before bed.
  • Get an electric toothbrush with a medium brush head.
  • Avoid any soft drink, fizzy drink or soda water. Bubbly drinks are acidic.
  • Avoid beer, wine, and coffee as they are also acidic.
  • Avoid drinking lemon juice with water every morning.
  • Never brush straight after acidic foods or drinks. Wait at least one hour.
  • Always drink plenty of water with food.
  • Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride.
  • Drink town water if it contains fluoride.
  • Get a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth at night.
  • Try some relaxing methods and physio or chiro if you clench during the day.
  • Use Biotene mouthwash to improve the dry mouth, and drink more water.
  • Try chewing sugar-free gum during the day to increase saliva production.
  • Use homemade baking soda solution as a mouthwash to neutralize the acids in your mouth from drinks or bacteria.
  • Change your medication if you can. Not all drugs have the same side effects.
  • Avoid snacking, stick to only three main meals, and brush afterward.
  • Avoid sweets as much as possible, or rinse your mouth straight after.
  • See your dentist regularly every six months.
  • Take x-rays more often to catch the decay earlier.
  • See your dentist every six months for cleans and applications of concentrated fluoride to protect your teeth from acids and decay.
  • Avoid smoking, as it damages your gums and changes the bacterial flora of the mouth.

digital dental sensors in mona vale

Digital Sensors

Digital sensors are an excellent alternative to traditional digital x-rays for some patients. With this type of x-ray, the patient can stay comfortably in the dental chair while the x-rays are taken. The dentist or dental professional places the compact digital sensor comfortably in the patient's mouth and quickly takes a set of high-quality x-rays.

These x-rays are high-resolution, and we can easily save them to your digital records for further examination. This type of x-ray also emits much lower radiation levels than former x-ray methods, making it desirable for many patients.

Intraoral Cameras

A dentist can use an intraoral camera during a patient's exam to show the patient exactly what he or she sees in their mouth, which can make understanding a diagnosis easier. The dentist may also use the intraoral camera to explain a procedure by showing you exactly where they'll be performing dental work.

We can capture high-quality images with the intraoral camera during the exam, which we can track the document developing problems and for your digital records.
